Butte Central is thrilled to announce that Richie O’Brien has been hired as the school’s first head baseball coach.
A 2002 graduate of Butte Central, Richie was a standout athlete for the Maroons, earning multiple all-conference and all-state honors in football, wrestling & track & field. From 2012-2021 Richie was an officer with the Butte-Silver Bow Law Enforcement Department and is currently an electrician for his family business. For the last 10 years, he has served as an assistant coach for Butte Central’s football and track teams. Richie has also coached Little League and Junior/ League baseball for the last 8 years.
“This spring, Butte Central Baseball will become a reality for the 1st time ever. I can’t think of anyone better suited to build and lead a successful high school baseball program. Richie’s engaging & energetic personality, along with his professional & coaching background, will no doubt benefit our athletes, athletic department, and school.” Butte Central Activities Director Chad Petersen said. “Over the last 10 years as an assistant coach, Richie has developed and maintained a positive & enthusiastic repour with our student-athletes. As excited as we are to have Richie lead this program from the ground up, we know our athletes will be just as excited to learn from and play for Coach O’Brien”.
The high school baseball season begins in March 2023. It’ll be the first season for high school baseball in the state of Montana. The MHSA adopted the sport in January 2022.
